Married to Valerie Velardi from 1978 to 1988, Williams faced a crossroads during the marriage, as he was forced to reassess his hard-partying lifestyle at a time when Valerie was pregnant. The death of his friend John Belushi from a drug overdose (only a few hours after sharing some cocaine with Williams) forced the actor to re-think his style of living. In a subsequent interview with People, Williams said, "And for me there was the baby coming. I knew I couldn't be a father and live that sort of life."
