Independent Films
In 1980, Redford founded the Sundance Institute (which would include the now-famous Sundance Film Festival) as a way of nurturing creativity outside the Hollywood system. The institute encourages and supports independent filmmakers, a spirit which Redford has pursued in his own work, backing a number of films considered "risky" by Hollywood standards. His third project as a director, for example, 1992's A River Runs Through It was turned down by major studios, but eventually managed to secure a minimal ten million dollars because of his credibility. Here, Redford is seen on set with actor Brad Pitt during the filming of the movie in 1991.
