Out of Africa and into Utah
In 1985, Redford co-starred with Meryl Streep in Sydney Pollack's Oscar-winning film, Out of Africa. It was around this time that Redford began to develop land in an isolated area of north-central Utah. Intending to provide an escape from the hectic pace of Hollywood, he had initially bought two acres in 1961 from a sheepherder for $500, and over time Redford acquired 7000 acres in the area, building a solar power home, establishing a ski resort and conference center. He named his investment "Sundance" after his groundbreaking film role.
