On his 1972 album, Dr. John's Gumbo, the artist shifted away from the stage theatrics of his "Night Tripper" period to a persona more consistent with his New Orleans R&B roots. Bringing the sounds of his native New Orleans to the rest of the country, Dr. John's cover of the Mardi Gras-inspired classic "Iko Iko" broke into the Billboard top 40 singles chart.
