Since Apartheid
In 1994, South Africa held its first multi-racial elections. In 1995, Queen Elizabeth II appointed Tutu a Chaplain and Sub-Prelate of the Venerable Order of Saint John. Later, Nelson Mandela appointed Archbishop Tutu as the chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Soon after in 1996, Tutu retired as Archbishop of Cape Town.
