Grohl gained notoriety at 17, when he becamse the drummer for his favorite group, Scream. A few years later, in 1990, he received a phone call from a group out of Seattle calling themselves Nirvana. He joined bassist Krist Novoselic, left in the photo above, and the charismatic guitarist and singer Kurt Cobain, right, to release Nevermind, issued one year later, which shot up the charts, pushing Michael Jackson from the top spot. The album's infectious angst-y sound became an instant classic and transformed the landscape of rock music.
