Prize for Peace
On October 7, 2011, Sirleaf was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, which she shared with fellow Liberian activist Leymah Gbowee and Yemen activist Tawakkul Karman. The Nobel Committee cited the women's dedication to "the safety of women and for women's rights to full participation in peace-building work." She has led Liberia, a country historically plagued by war, through a sustained peace and promoted social and economic development.
