The liberal Levin--whose brother is Michigan Senator Carl Levin--beat John Pappageorge by 7% in 1992 and 5% in 1994. Though Levin has muted his liberalism--working against parts of President Clinton's ill-fated health-care bill and voting for the G.O.P. welfare-reform bill--this election may be even closer than the first two.
