Maryland

Riding the Upper Yough is more a dare than an experience. This particular stretch of the Youghiogheny River running through the western part of the state represents one of the country's best rafting experiences — and perhaps most terrifying. For nearly 10 miles, the river drops about 116 feet per mile, making the Upper Yough pretty much one long stretch of Class 5 rapids — the second most difficult kind. If you are in good shape and can really work a paddle, plenty of rafting companies will take you on the run. For the rest of us, there's the Splash Mountain water park in Ocean City.
