Parts of this unique salt lake lie in the Occupied Territories — now Palestine in UNESCO's eyes — and could achieve World Heritage status. Overlooking the Dead Sea on a rocky promontory would be one of Israel's UNESCO sites: the ancient fortress at Masada.
