The Pope Gets Smoked
The onetime custom of burning an effigy of the Pope dates to 1673, when the heir presumptive, James, Duke of York, made his conversion to Catholicism public. In this photo, people mark Nov. 5 by burning the Pope in effigy. To this day, the holiday is marked by the creation of bonfires, sometimes to disastrous effect.
