In September right-wing Israeli politician Ariel Sharon visited the holy place in Jerusalem that Jews call the Temple Mount and that Arabs know as the Noble Sanctuary. Muslims saw the visit to the contested site, which is administered by a Muslim trust, as a politically provocative act. Protests led to violence, which quickly spread beyond the city.
