John McCain really put the shivers into George W. Bush last winter. The Arizona senator was a war hero with the common touch and one powerful issue — campaign finance reform — and it struck a chord. Winning the New Hampshire primary gave him momentum, but missteps with negative campaigning and the Confederate flag issue were brutally exploited by Bush, and after Super Tuesday it was over. But McCain has promised a bruising Senate battle over his cause, and no one doubts him.
