Efforts to bring the arms race between the two superpowers under control began in earnest with the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT), which began in 1969. The bilateral meetings lasted for many years and produced limited results but brought the two sides together on the critical issue. This 1973 photo of Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and U.S. President Richard Nixon was taken on a plane en route to Camp David, Maryland, to continue conversations about preventing nuclear war.
