Human Rights Watch obtained its data through a series of 68 interviews with migrant workers from 2009 to 2010. In an e-mailed response to questions from TIME, Peter Nixon, vice president of communications and contributions for Philip Morris, wrote, "Philip Morris International is firmly opposed to child labor and all other labor abuses." The e-mail went on, "Over the past years, Philip Morris Kazakhstan has required tobacco leaf suppliers to sign contracts that ensure proper labor conditions for workers and prohibits forced labor and child labor."
