The Child Tobacco Farmers of Kazakhstan

A migrant worker in the fields near Malybai. Last year, Human Rights Watch documented 72 cases of child labor on Kazakh tobacco farms. Most Kazakh tobacco comes from the Enbekshikazakh district, in the southeast of the country, near the Kyrgyz border. According to the Human Rights Watch report, Philip Morris Kazakhstan, a wholly owned subsidiary of Philip Morris International, is the only tobacco buyer in the district, and the cigarettes it manufactures from the Kazakh tobacco are sold only in former Soviet republics.
