The mainstream was introduced to Jennifer Lopez in her breakout performance of the Tejano music singer, Selena, who was then relatively unknown. Although many of the singer's fans were outraged that a Puerto Rican actress was chosen for the role, Lopez's outstanding portrayal of the singer convinced them otherwise. The movie follows the life of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez from her humble roots to super stardom, right through to her death at the hands of her friend and the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldívar. Jennifer Lopez won a Golden Globe for her performance.
