In the 1990s, Pickens championed the use of natural gas as a viable alternative fuel for automobiles. During that time, he formed the Pickens Fuel Corporation — now known as Clean Energy — which has become the largest provider of vehicular natural gas in North America. In July of this year, he testified before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee about alternative energy plans.
