Growing up in Oklahoma gave Pickens a great love for the outdoors. On his Pampa, Texas Ranch (where he takes aim at a quail in the 1997 photo above) he constructed several dozen miles of underground water lines to maintain small watering holes for wildlife. He has also supported an ongoing Oklahoma State biological study to measure the effect of heat and overgrazed habitat on the young quail on the ranch.
