North Korean Border

There's really no such thing as a dream vacation town on this peninsula but there are a few cool places to go outside the city. A trip to the North Korean border is hands down the best day trip out of Seoul. Sign up with a tour organization, such as the U.S.O. or the Panmunjom Travel Center, licensed to take foreigners to the world's last cold war frontier. The trip will take the better part of a day and will cost about $70, for which you can look a grim faced North Korean solider in the eye.

Night Skiing at Jisan Forest

Korea isn't exactly renowned for world-class skiing, but it does offer night skiing into the wee hours — 4 a.m. to be exact — at the Jisan Forest Resort, about 40 miles (64 km) outside of Seoul. The facility has about a dozen short runs and a DJ to liven up the slopes. Visitors can rent gear and equipment at the mountain, and there's a free shuttle bus (031-644-1241) from downtown Seoul.
