Opened in 1953, the Dan, danhotels.com, is the closest Tel Aviv has to a hotel grand dame — a beachfront bolt-hole that has hosted everyone from Presidents and Prime Ministers to Sharon Stone and Madonna. Set right on Tel Aviv's seafront promenade — yet still within walking distance of the city's top shopping and dining — the Dan is housed behind an iconic, Technicolor façade courtesy of Israeli artist Yaacov Agam. Inside, look for original 1960s and 1970s furniture, an ultra-informed concierge, a full-service spa and a beachside towel service in summer. If the beach looks crowded, head for the sanctuary of the Dan's own outdoor seawater pool and sun deck.

As for the accommodation, the Dan's 286 recently renovated rooms and suites are all equipped with wi-fi, iPod connections and subtle olive-colored furnishings. There's a trio of seafront suites with private balconies, while the aptly named Sea View Executive Rooms come with prime Mediterranean views.

The seafront is packed with fashionable dining choices but be sure to save time for Rafael, tel: (972-3) 522 6464. Long considered Israel's best restaurant, it's next door to the Dan and home to chef Rafi Cohen's mod-Med cuisine as well as Tel Aviv's nipped-and-tucked ladies who lunch.
