Members of Mara 18 were shot and wounded when a rival street gang called Mara Salvatrucha entered the facility late in the evening, killing the 12 and leaving 14 other gang members seriously. The fight appeared to be part of an ongoing series of battles between the two gangs at correctional facilities across the country that have cost the lives of dozens of people in recent months
