Beirut Explodes

A bystander calls for help in the aftermath of a bomb blast that killed Rafik Hariri and fourteen others. The former Prime Minister had begun to press for Syria to end its three-decade occupation of Lebanon, and his assassination drew an angry response from many Lebanese, as well as the Bush administration, much of it directed at Damascus. The bombing also raised fears among the long-suffering residents of Beirut of a return to the bloodletting of the civil war that ended 15 years ago.
