"In the early 1990s I spent a fair amount of time in South Africa documenting the battle to overthrow apartheid. South Africans are now being triaged by an invisible enemy oblivious to the courage and idealism with which they prevailed against impossible odds in their political struggle. Although the AIDS epidemic is a devastating postscript to a story that embodied the best that humanity has to offer, there is no alternative but to defeat it. That can be accomplished only through awareness and education, both within the countries affected and in the rest of the world, which must lend support and assistance. My goal as a photojournalist, as it has been from the beginning, is to help create that awareness."
Eloquently put, and I hope you will join me in making a contribution to slowing down this calamity. For information about how you can do that, please turn to page 8.
