Though Levin has muted his liberalism--working against parts of President Clinton's ill-fated health-care bill and voting for the G.O.P. welfare-reform bill--this election may be even closer than the first two.

Pappageorge, in his third consecutive run against Sander Levin, claims to have over 12,000 campaign volunteers--"the largest [army of volunteers] of any congressional candidate."
