THE NETHERLANDS: End of a Reign

Beatrix and Juliana share a dislike of the press, but otherwise the future Queen differs considerably from her mother. Despite an infectious grin that is perhaps her greatest charm, the round-faced princess tends to be cool, short-tempered and arrogant. As Beatrix herself once admitted: "My mother is very patient. I'm not." Relations between mother and daughter have become strained in recent years, and the Queen once expressed the hope that increasing European unity might preclude the need for a future Queen Beatrix. Juliana, in fact, had twice passed by suitable occasions to turn the throne over to her daughter. Observes Dame Christine Wttewaall van Stoetvegen, an old friend of the royal family's: "Beatrix runs the risk of being a bit too quick. But she'll learn to break habit."
