Throughout their ordeal the genial Heineken (whose value is estimated at more than $500 million) and his loyal employee of 40 years remained surprisingly healthy. They were nonetheless kept constantly on edge. In a brief statement distributed after their release, Heineken wrote, "I always saved one slice of bread for the night, because you could never be sure that there would be bread the following morning," while Doderer wryly noted that the Chinese food he was served by the kidnapers "didn't taste as good as that of my usual Chinese place." As soon as their chains were cut, the relieved victims were given clean clothes and driven to the millionaire's luxurious villa in the seaside resort of Noordwijk. For the first time in three weeks the family flag fluttered above the heavily guarded mansion. ∎
