The Japanese purchase should enable Lockheed to borrow more money from bankers, who have been holding back until the All Nippon deal was closed. Most of what is left of Lockheed's $250 million Government-backed loan is tied up in production of the 3,400-mile-range conventional Tri-Star. The company now needs between $80 million and $100 million to expand its potential market by developing a 4,200-mile-range TriStar.
