To the last man, political observers expected Echeverría, a cashier's son who grew up to become a lawyer and political scientist, to win an easy victory this week over his sole opponent, Efrain Gonzáles Morfin of the conservative Partido Acción Nacional (P.A.N.). The strenuous campaign proved beyond doubt that Echeverría would change the style of the Mexican presidency. Whether he also intended to change its policies remained to be seen.
