Aliens, Rifles, Dirks. Almost daily thus reminded of anti-American schemings, the nation was in aggressive mood. In Altoona, Pa., near the Pennsylvania Railroad's famed horseshoe curve, which the saboteurs from Berlin had hoped to destroy, the FBI picked up 250 aliens. Passengers on the returning liner Drottningholm, ready to be repatriated from Europe, were held for minute grilling. From Washington the FBI reported that it had arrested 8,844 enemy aliens, seized 3,000 guns, 200,000 rounds of ammunition, 1,652 sticks of dynamite, 1,645 short-wave radios, and 956 swords, bayonets, knives and dirks.
