Last week's bravura performance by Lance took some of the political pressure off Carter. By neatly disposing of several of the charges against him and making others appear more complex and murky than his accusers had suggested, Lance showed that a reasonable manlike Cartermight not be sure of what, if anything, he had done wrong. But for a President who sets such high standards for morality and frugality, who insists that members of his Administration must be above suspicion, that seemed hardly enough.
