Leukemia, a cancerlike disease of the blood, had the most varied list of possible causes. Dr. Lowell A. Erf, of Philadelphia's Jefferson Medical College, named as possible villains to be watched: radiation (from cosmic rays, X rays), chemical changes within the body's blood-making cells, chemicals outside the body (industrial wastes, gasoline fumes), the emotions (which upset the body's metabolism), and viruses. Dr. Erf had a suggestion for research: since leukemia victims have improved after having virus diseases, give them a mild strain of virus diseases like chickenpox or flu.
