Now, thanks to Redlich, required courses take three hours a week for most of the four years. Dr. Redlich's emphasis on the social aspects of mental health will soon be extended to the entire medical school, which has a faculty of 1,072 (511 full-time). Yale, the nation's sixth oldest medical school, generally rated among the top six in excellence, is revamping its curriculum with the aim of producing physicians who will combine excellence in scientific training with the ability to see their patients not as "cases" but as human beings in a social setting. That is what Yale's new dean has always wanted.
