Died. General Edouard Viscount de Curières de Castelnau, 92, World War I "Savior of Nancy"; on his family estate near Toulouse, France. The white-headed, square-headed, deeply religious General ("the booted friar") held the powerful German thrust at Nancy by his then-radical respect for machine-gun firepower. In the early '20s he condemned the League of Nations, demanded a huge standing army for France, led the League of Young Patriots and the Catholic Nationalists in pitched street battles against French Communists.
