Nobody's Children are the millions of Chinese who live in Occupied China. Chiang cannot feed them, Japan will not. Last year, Shanghai's hunger-crazed beggars attacked rice carts trundling through the streets. One dealer had to sack his rice in coal bags for protection. Hundreds of frozen corpses were picked up from the streets. A twelve-year-old girl was killed and her younger brother wounded by Japanese sentries as they tried to slip through the Japanese lines that seal hungry Shanghai from the farming country outside. Just as surely as rice was hardening in the husk in Asia last week, uncounted little people would die for want of it before the year was out.
*Hunan (meaning South of the Lakes) is not to be confused with the Province of Honan (South of the River) or Hupeh (North of the Lakes).
