To the betting windows rushed a fortunate few to collect $43 for every $2 wager, longest Derby odds since 1918. Bold Venture earned $37,725, got a blanket of roses, the privilege of having his name on the Churchill Downs gate five panels away from that of his half-brother Twenty Grand, winner in 1931. Jockey Hanford, undismayed by a 15-day suspension given him for "rough riding," chortled: "They've suspended me? They've set me down? Well, I guess I'll go out in the barn and spend the 15 days feeding sugar to that horse."

*When registering Brevity, Owner Widener wrote in the stud book: Brevity, by Chance Shot or Sickle, out of Ormanda. *In one of her rare visits to the race track last week, Trainer Mary Hirsch's younger sister Katherine placed $2 on Bernard Mamies Baruch's Joyride, whose victory brought her $10. Later she placed the same amount on New York Representative Parker Coming's Flying Mare, who galloped home in the lead, brought her $26. Total winnings for Sister Katherine on Sister Mary's horses: $32.
