Work Done. Last week the U. S. Senate:
¶ Debated the tariff bill.
¶ Adopted an amendment permitting manufacturers and organized labor to intervene in customs cases involving valuation and classification of imported merchandise; rejected an amendment permitting them to intervene in customs cases involving reappraisement and protest against collectors decisions.
¶ Adopted a Cutting Amendment to eliminate from the tariff bill the ban on "obscene" books (see p. 16).
¶ Rejected the King Amendment proposing to grant independence to the Philippines; rejected the Broussard Amendment providing an international conference to decide on Philippine independence (see p. 17).
¶ . Confirmed the appointment of Harry Frank Guggenheim as Ambassador to Cuba (see p. 13).
