Carruth's first film captured the paranoia of time travel. Now he's back with a meditation on identity, nature and Thoreau's Walden.

Carruth knows something about building himself up from nothing. Now he may be forging a new path for young independent filmmakers, ones who might have plans for themselves that don't involve blockbuster franchises adapted from comic books. He's already looking forward to his next project, a modern epic he hopes to set on the high seas. "You don't need to make $100 million at the box office to have a story that can be relevant in the culture for a long time," he says. "You just need to be earnest."
