When Kate Moss launched her modeling career in the late 1980s, the wafer-thin girl from London didn't fit the mold of the superstars who came before her tall, curvaceous and elegant women like Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell. In a way, Moss's childlike "heroin chic" look, which was immortalized in a topless Calvin Klein advertisement when she was just 19, marked the end of the "supermodel era" and the renaissance of '90s grunge.
As famous for her antics as for her ad campaigns, Moss's personal life is often played out in the tabloids, with questions about her weight and alleged drug use casting a shadow over her otherwise successful career. With two stints in rehab under her belt once for "exhaustion" in 1998 and once for cocaine in 2005, after photos of her appearing to use the drug ran in the Daily Mirror and prompted her to lose campaigns for numerous labels Moss has tried over recent years to put her party-girl rep to rest. She ended her on-and-off relationship with bad boy Pete Doherty for good in 2007, signed contracts with such brands as Bvlgari, Burberry, Christian Dior and Roberto Cavalli, among many others, and launched her own fashion line to be sold exclusively at Topshop. And in July 2011, Moss, 37, wed The Kills rocker Jamie Hince in a private and needless to say fabulously fashionable ceremony in England.
