Uniform trends come and go. For New York Mets fans, one trend couldn't fade into the night fast enough. The Mets, like many other professional sports teams, jumped on the black bandwagon in the late ’90s with a jersey that steered clear of its trademark blue and orange and embraced the team's dark side. According to an interview on ESPN's UniWatch blog, the black jersey was created as a marketing ploy to help the team's merchandise sales catch up to those of the Yankees, and it simply caught hold. The ebony jerseys were intended as alternates but soon were designated as "club preferred," leading the team to take on an overall darker tone with the addition of a black drop shadow to the logo script, black skyline logo and black hats.
