A Woman of Distinction

The 1950s film A Woman of Distinction, starring Rosalind Russell, features the first known mock TIME cover to be used in a movie. Russell plays the fictional Susan Manning Middlecott, dean of Benton, a small women's college. In the film, Middlecott finds herself gracing the cover of TIME (done in the original black-and-white styling) for her work as dean. Russell reportedly collected TIME magazines prior to this film, and some sources say she hung the original mock-up in her home. The actress eventually earned a real TIME cover in 1953.
