Former Chief Reporter, News of the World
Thurlbeck's credits at the tabloid include a 2004 story that alleged David Beckham was having an affair and a 2008 article which described Formula One's then chief Max Mosley "as a secret sadomasochist sex pervert" (Mosley won record damages from the paper in a subsequent privacy case). Documents seized from Glenn Mulcaire, the private investigator employed by the paper, implicated 50-year old Thurlbeck in the phone hacking scandal; he was arrested April 5, the same day as News of the World associate news editor Ian Edmondson. Thurlbeck denies any involvement in the scandal.
