Reporter, the News of the World
Hoare was the first News of the World journalist to publicly claim that former boss Andy Coulson knew of and encouraged phone hacking. The veteran show-business correspondent, described by colleagues as "an old-fashioned Fleet Street character," first blew the whistle on the News of the World in September 2010 as part of an investigation by the New York Times. Hoare's revelations helped reignite the scandal that ultimately forced Coulson from his post as spokesman for Prime Minister David Cameron. Hoare, who was in his mid-40s, was found dead at his home in the London suburb of Watford on July 18, 2011. Police said the death was "unexplained" but "not thought to be suspicious."
