Allen's Hummingbirds in Irvine, Calif.

Hummingbirds dart around so fast — even when they hover in midair to slurp nectar from a flower their wings flap up to 50 times a second — that it can seem impossible to get a good look at one. But thanks to this excellent webcam mounted just above the nest of an Allen's Hummingbird in Irvine, Calif., even the bird's tiny eggs are easily spied in the tidy nest lodged between two rosebush branches. In mid–April, the iridescent green beauty laid two eggs, which should hatch just before May. According to the Audubon society, Allen's Hummingbirds' narrow Pacific Coast habitat is actually one of the smallest on earth, making this bird's-eye view all the more precious.
