When 11-year old Chelsea Clinton left a piano lesson one day in 1991, Socks literally jumped into her arms and Chelsea wouldn't let go. The Clintons adopted the cat, who eventually moved with them from the Arkansas Governor's mansion to the White House. In Washington, Socks enjoyed a pampered and carefree existence, and even became the host of the children's version of the White House web site. Then Buddy arrived. Hillary stated that Socks despised the chocolate Labrador Retriever "instantly and forever," and not even Bill could negotiate a truce. As he told CNN: "I did better with the Arabs the Palestinians and the Israelis than I have done with Socks and Buddy." Socks passed away on February 20, 2009 after a long bout with jaw cancer. He was 19.
