The Smurfs began as a comic strip but became a Saturday-morning staple with their animated TV series. There were hundreds of them, most of whom looked exactly alike, with names like Grouchy Smurf, Brainy Smurf and Papa Smurf. And smurf wasn't just a surname: it was a verb, a noun and an adjective, as in, "We're smurfily going smurfing down near the smurf next to smurf." Yet no matter where they smurfed, they were always able to outsmurf Gargamel, the little blue guys' sworn enemy.
