The Super Bowl Blizzard, January 1975
The weather in the U.S. was strange and dangerous during the second week of January 1975, days before football's biggest event. Dozens of people and thousands of livestock died in what has been called the Super Bowl Blizzard because of its timing. In parts of the Midwest, pressure dropped to record lows, winds raged and there were 20-ft. (6 m) snowdrifts. Meanwhile, southern states were hit by tornadoes, and some areas of the country, including Chicago, saw unusually high temperatures. Minnesota's Vikings, playing in New Orleans, lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
