Talk of a "double-dip" recession intensified in 2010 enough to put the rather pessimistic term on the New Oxford American Dictionary's Word of the Year shortlist. Debate abounded over whether or not signs of economic growth indicated a true recovery; some feared the U.S. economy was doomed for another contraction a double dip.
