Say this for the fast-food industry: it hasn't taken the changes in American eating habits lying down. In a profoundly American stroke of marketing genius, it's gone countercultural, making weirder, gaudier, more gruesomely unhealthy creations than the industry's franchising forebears ever dreamed of. A bacon and cheese sandwich made with two fried chicken breasts? Check. A 2,530-calorie "pizza burger" 9½ in. wide? Check. How about a burger between two grilled-cheese sandwiches? Is that insane enough? For KFC, Burger King and Friendly's, apparently not. When we look back, 2010 will go down as the year fast food encountered surrealism and the result was delicious!
