No one knows where this trend came from or why. Was there a vast audience of people hungering to see hypermasculine food stars eating giant sandwiches, throwing the double Viking and other obnoxious hand gestures and generally acting like douche bags? Did America suddenly have a longing for books like Cook to Bang, a quasi-ironic collection of "recipes to get you laid"? The best of the dude-food group, like the Food Network's Guy Fieri and the Travel Channel's Adam Richman, are just regular guys being themselves, enthusing over chili and eating oversize portions. But their imitators, both on TV and in print, are making me long for the days of the Galloping Gourmet.
